Donald Wininger Collection

The Donald Wininger Collection preserves three generations of mineral collecting spanning the 1940s through the early 2000s. Acquired by Grounded Lifestyles in 2026, the collection includes historic specimens from classic localities across the United States and Canada, with much of the material dating to the mid-20th century.

Through the Mine to Mind Blog, we explore the geology, mining localities, crystal formation, collecting history, and provenance behind these specimens. Each article goes beyond the original label to document what makes these older minerals significant to collectors today.

Historic mineral collections preserve more than individual specimens. Original labels, locality information, crystal habits, associated minerals, and the period in which a specimen was collected can provide valuable geological and collecting context.

The Donald Wininger Collection includes minerals gathered across several decades, with particularly strong representation from classic North American localities. Specimens include calcite, celestite, zircon, apatite, serpentine, native silver, copper, amphiboles, quartz, and other collector minerals.

Our research examines how each mineral formed, the geology of its locality, the history of the mine or collecting area when known, and why specimens from that locality became significant to mineral collectors.

Localities / Examples

The collection reaches across important mineral regions of the United States and Canada, including Michigan, South Dakota, Ohio, Indiana, New York, Georgia, Arizona, Nevada, Ontario, Quebec, and other historic collecting areas.

Featured localities include the Pugh Quarry in Ohio, the Mohawk Valley of New York, the Bancroft mineral region of Ontario, the Cobalt mining district of Ontario, the Yates Mine in Quebec, the Ropes Gold Mine in Michigan, and other classic North American mineral localities.

Because this is a historic collection, original locality information varies. When an old label provides only a state, province, region, or incomplete mine attribution, we preserve that uncertainty rather than assigning a more specific locality without supporting evidence.

Collector / Practical Notes

Older mineral collections can offer specimens from localities that have changed dramatically, become inaccessible, closed to collecting, or are remembered for material that is increasingly difficult to obtain.

When evaluating historic specimens, consider more than mineral species alone. Locality, crystal quality, condition, associated minerals, original labels, collection history, and documented provenance can all contribute to collector interest.

Grounded Lifestyles preserves available collection information with each specimen whenever possible. Historic labels and attribution are treated as part of the specimen’s story rather than replaced with unsupported modern assumptions.
