Choosing a Cabochon for Your First Framed Wrap

Half-round wire is particularly useful for the bindings. Its flat side can sit against the structural bundle while the curved side remains visible, allowing several frame wires to be held together without creating unnecessary bulk.
You can build cabochon settings with round wire as well, so do not interpret square and half-round as mandatory materials. They are simply extremely useful for this style of structured frame.

Measuring the Cabochon
Before cutting the structural wire, measure around the perimeter of the cab rather than relying only on its height and width.

Making the First Binding
Lay the structural wires side by side on a flat work surface, making sure their ends are aligned and the bundle is not twisted.
Take the half-round binding wire and position its flat side against the structural wires. Make several close, controlled wraps around the complete bundle, keeping each turn beside the previous one rather than allowing the wraps to overlap randomly.
The binding needs to be snug enough to hold the wires together but should not crush or deform them.
After completing the wraps, trim the binding wire carefully and position the cut end where it will not interfere with later shaping.
Repeat this process at the planned binding locations, checking frequently that the structural wires remain parallel.
Consistency matters because irregular bindings become much more obvious once the frame is curved around a polished stone.
Shape the Frame Before Setting the Stone
Once the structural bundle has been bound, begin forming it around the cabochon.
Do not force the entire frame into shape in one movement. Start near the lower center and gradually work around the perimeter, using fingers wherever possible and pliers only when more precise control is required.
Keep the cab nearby and check the fit repeatedly.
The frame should follow the girdle closely without being so tight that the stone has to be forced into position. Remember that the cab still needs to enter the frame before the retaining wires are closed.

Insert the Cabochon

The closer the structural frame matches the cab at this stage, the cleaner the finished setting will be.
Creating the Rear Retaining Structure
The stone needs support behind it so that pressure against the face cannot simply push it backward through the frame.
Between selected bindings, use a structural wire to create a controlled inward bend toward the back of the cab. This does not need to cross the entire back of the stone. It only needs to overlap the edge sufficiently to prevent the cab from moving through the opening.
Work progressively around the frame, creating rear support at several locations.
Avoid making one enormous bend and expecting it to carry the entire stone. Several smaller, strategically positioned retaining points distribute support more effectively and generally produce a cleaner appearance.
Once the rear retaining wires have been established, place the cab back into the frame and check that it rests against them evenly.
The stone should no longer be able to move backward through the setting.
Creating the Front Retaining Wires
The front retaining wires perform the opposite job: they prevent the cab from pushing forward out of the frame.
Select structural wires between the bindings and carefully move them toward the face of the cab so that they overlap the girdle slightly.

The wire does not need to travel far across the polished dome to secure the stone. A properly positioned retaining wire can capture the edge while leaving nearly the entire face visible.
Work around the cab gradually, alternating sides so the stone remains centered in the frame. If every front retaining wire is tightened on one side before the opposite side is addressed, the cab can shift and end up sitting crooked.

Some can be trimmed and tucked into the rear structure. Others can become small spirals or curved accents, provided those elements contribute to the composition.
Avoid turning every remaining wire into a decorative spiral simply because you need somewhere to put it.
A cleaner solution is often to trim excess wire and finish the end neatly against the frame.
Whenever a wire is cut, inspect the end carefully. Flush cutters reduce the amount of finishing required, but the cut still needs to be positioned where it cannot scratch skin, snag clothing, or damage the chain.
