This natural Blue Halite specimen comes from the Mosaic Potash Mine in Carlsbad, New Mexico, part of one of America’s most important potash-producing districts. Measuring 1.25 inches long, 0.75 inches wide, and 1.25 inches high, this compact specimen displays the unusual blue coloration that makes Carlsbad Halite particularly desirable among mineral collectors.
Unlike ordinary colorless or white Halite, naturally blue examples are immediately recognizable for their blue to blue-violet coloration. The combination of unusual color and a well-known New Mexico mining locality gives this specimen considerably more collector interest than common Halite.
Geology & Natural Blue Color
Halite is natural sodium chloride (NaCl) and normally forms colorless, white, or pale crystals. The blue coloration found in some Carlsbad material is associated with defects or color centers within the Halite crystal lattice, rather than simply being caused by blue mineral inclusions.
The Carlsbad deposits formed within ancient Permian evaporite beds. Roughly 250 million years ago, repeated evaporation of mineral-rich seawater left enormous underground deposits of Halite and potassium-bearing minerals.
The region consequently contains an important assemblage of evaporite minerals including Halite, Sylvite, Langbeinite, Carnallite, and other potassium and magnesium salts.

Mosaic Potash Mine – Is It Still Operating?
The mine is not closed, although its ownership recently changed.
The Carlsbad operation historically known to collectors as the Mosaic Potash Mine was sold in 2026. International Minerals Carlsbad acquired the operation and officially assumed control on April 30, 2026.
For mineral provenance, Mosaic Potash Mine, Carlsbad, New Mexico remains appropriate for this specimen because that identifies the mine under the name associated with the specimen when it entered the mineral market.
Although mining continues, this is an industrial underground potash operation and not a public mineral-collecting locality. Continued commercial mining therefore does not mean collectors can simply visit the mine to obtain additional Blue Halite.
