Geological Birth & Transformation
Unakite originates as granite—an igneous rock enriched with feldspar, quartz, and biotite. Deep in the crust, hydrothermal activity and mild metamorphism replace the plagioclase feldspar with vibrant green epidote, while the pink orthoclase feldspar remains. The addition of clear quartz often accompanies this transformation, yielding the vibrant, granitic metamorphic rock we know as Unakite.
Where It’s Found
Unakite takes its name from the Unaka Mountain Range between North Carolina and Tennessee, where it was first documented by F. H. Bradley in 1874.
Additional deposits have been reported in Virginia and along Lake Superior, where glacial activity has washed fragments downstream.
Less commonly, Unakite appears in Brazil, China, South Africa, Sierra Leone, and parts of Australia.
