Description

Each Turritella Jasper Half Pound Tumbled Stone Pack contains polished pieces from Wyoming’s Green River Formation, a site famous for fossil preservation. These stones are composed of ancient snail shells that have been replaced by silica, transforming organic remains into shimmering fossil chalcedony.
The tumbled finish enhances both color and pattern, revealing exquisite spiral shells set within earthy brown and caramel tones.

Geological Background

Turritella Jasper is a fossiliferous variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz (SiO₂). Despite its name, it is not a true jasper or agate. The fossil shells embedded within it belong to Elimia tenera, an extinct freshwater snail species from the family Pleuroceridae—not the marine Turritella genus as once believed.

These fossils date to the Miocene Epoch, approximately 24 million years ago, when they accumulated in shallow freshwater lakes of what is now Wyoming, USA. Over time, silica-rich groundwater permeated the sediments, replacing organic material with quartz and preserving each shell in extraordinary detail.

Uses & Applications

Turritella Jasper’s fossilized form makes it a fascinating and meaningful stone for both study and practice:

  • Educational & Geological Displays – Perfect for teaching fossilization and chalcedony replacement processes.

  • Meditation & Reflection – Used to connect with ancestral memory, grounding one in the flow of time and evolution.

  • Home Décor & Conversation Pieces – Stunning in bowls, shadow boxes, or terrariums where shell patterns can be viewed up close.

  • Crystal Grids & Energy Work – Represents ancient wisdom and Earth’s cycles, complementing grounding and protection layouts.

  • Pocket or Travel Stones – A tangible reminder of endurance and transformation through natural history.

  • Creative Inspiration – Favored by artisans and storytellers as a muse for legacy, time, and continuity.

Historical & Cultural Context

Named for its resemblance to Turritella marine shells, the stone has long intrigued both geologists and collectors. Its discovery in the Green River Formation helped illustrate the link between volcanic activity, sedimentary processes, and fossil preservation.
Spiritually, Turritella Jasper has been used as a “stone of ancestry”, representing continuity between past and present and deepening connection to family lineage and place.

Aesthetic & Collector Evaluation

Turritella Jasper displays fossil snail cross-sections in shades of cream, caramel, and coffee brown, contrasting with a translucent chalcedony matrix. Each stone tells a story—tiny spiral patterns preserved in quartz, immortalizing ancient life from prehistoric freshwater environments.

Metaphysical Notes

Traditionally regarded as a stone of Earth connection, protection, and endurance, Turritella Jasper is said to anchor one’s spirit to ancestral roots while encouraging strength through change. It symbolizes wisdom carried through time, bridging geology and spirituality.
