Description

This 5-inch Picasso Marble point is carved from Picasso Marble, a metamorphic stone found in the Beaver County region of Utah. Scientifically, Picasso Marble is a dolomitic marble, meaning it originated as limestone or dolostone that underwent metamorphism under intense heat and pressure. During this process, graphite, iron, and manganese oxides infiltrated the stone, creating its characteristic linear and web-like veining patterns.

The result is a dense, fine-grained marble with interwoven streaks of gray, black, and cream — an appearance so artistic that it evokes the cubist style of Pablo Picasso, from which the stone takes its name.

Formation and Geological Context

Picasso Marble formed during the Sevier Orogeny, a mountain-building event in the western United States during the Late Mesozoic era (about 140–80 million years ago). Sedimentary carbonate beds were buried and subjected to metamorphism, recrystallizing the original calcite and dolomite grains.

During this transformation, manganese and graphite introduced from hydrothermal fluids created the dark veining patterns, while iron oxides produced subtle brown and tan accents. Each piece is therefore a snapshot of ancient tectonic forces — marble turned into natural art by Earth’s own energy.

Physical Characteristics

  • Size: 5 inches tall

  • Material: Natural dolomitic marble

  • Coloration: Gray to black with white, tan, and gold veining

  • Finish: Hand-carved, polished point with satin sheen

  • Origin: Utah, USA

The polished point emphasizes both the flowing veining and the directional structure of the marble, making it ideal for display as a sculptural or geological specimen.

Scientific and Collector Relevance

Geologically, Picasso Marble offers insight into contact metamorphism and mineral diffusion. The presence of carbon and manganese oxides in linear streaks reflects fluid movement through fractures, capturing both the mechanical and chemical imprint of metamorphism.

Collectors value Picasso Marble for its natural abstract beauty, while geologists appreciate it as a prime example of dolomite recrystallization and pigment mineralization.

Symbolism and Uses

  • Decorative and Artistic Use: Adds elegance and contrast to interiors, desks, or display shelves.

  • Educational Specimen: Demonstrates metamorphic processes and mineral banding.

  • Metaphysical:

    • Believed to promote creativity, discipline, and transformation.

    • Symbolizes the balance between structure and freedom — mirroring its visual patterns.

    • Commonly associated with grounding and introspection during change.

Care and Handling

  • Clean with a soft cloth and mild soap; avoid acids or abrasives.

  • Do not expose to vinegar or citrus-based cleaners, as acids can etch the marble.

  • Store upright or cushioned to prevent surface scratching.

  • Safe for indoor display; prolonged UV exposure may slightly dull polish.
