Description
Geological Origin & Mineral Composition
Despite its name, this “Green Onyx” is actually a banded calcite (also known as travertine), primarily sourced from Balochistan, Pakistan. It forms over time through the precipitation of calcium carbonate-rich solutions—often around warm springs or cave systems—resulting in layered, translucent patterns of green, white, beige, and earthy browns. These layers are prized for their decorative appearance and polishability.
How It Grows in the Earth
Green calcite forms when calcium carbonate-laden water flows or drips in caves and springs. As the water evaporates or cools, mineral deposition occurs, gradually building up intricate banded structures. The accumulation of fine layers over time creates the striking visual depth and movement seen in each glass piece.
Artisan Creation & Aesthetic Use
Each glass is thoughtfully hand-carved from a single piece of this material, preserving natural color transitions and banding. The polish lends a refined shine that highlights the patterns beautifully. These glasses are elegant for sipping sherry or wine, and also make striking decorative objects or thoughtful gifts.
While some may worry about food safety, banded calcite (calcium carbonate) is generally stable for beverages—just avoid prolonged exposure to highly acidic liquids like vinegar
