Golden Barite with Yellow Calcite from Elk Creek, South Dakota comes from the Donald Wininger Collection and represents one of the state’s most recognizable mineral associations.
The specimen measures approximately 1.25 inches long, 0.25 inches wide, and 1 inch high and comes in the 2 × 2 × 2 inch Perky display box shown.
Its centerpiece is a substantial translucent Barite crystal with a warm golden-amber to brown coloration and a well-defined termination. Additional Barite crystals emerge across a sparkling yellow Calcite-rich matrix, giving this compact specimen considerably more dimension than its size might suggest.
Under stronger lighting, the Barite becomes especially attractive. Thick portions deepen toward amber-brown, while thinner areas and crystal edges allow more light to pass through, revealing golden and honey tones.
The area near Elk Creek and Dalzell in Meade County became famous among collectors for unusually attractive golden to amber Barite crystals associated with yellow Calcite. The Barite can develop thick prismatic forms with distinctive pointed or chisel-like terminations—quite different from the flat, bladed Barite seen at many other localities.
That combination of golden color, crystal clarity, unusual habit and yellow Calcite association has made Elk Creek material recognizable to generations of American mineral collectors.
